Marriage at the Consulate General of Romania

Validity of Marriage

  • According to the Romanian law, the Consular Officers are permitted to perform marriages.

Who can apply for a Romanian Marriage Certificate?

  • Both marriage partners should apply in person at the Consulate General

What is the minimum age requirement?

  • The minimum age to file a petition for a spouse is 18

How to apply for a Romanian Marriage Certificate

  • Complete and sign the Petition for performing the Marriage in front of the Consul

What are the necessary documents?

  • Romanian and/or American Birth Certificates, which show the name of both parents
  • Romanian and/or American Passports

  • Medical Examination, valid for 14 days

  • Divorce or death certificate of any previous spouse. (The death and divorce documents that show termination of marriages must be legal and verifiable in the country that issued them. Divorces must be final.)

  • Affidavit of  Eligibility to marry (Statement of Coutume), stating that they are free to marry

 

How to obtain a Romanian Marriage Certificate

  • Come in person to the Consulate General

How long does it take? 

  • A Romanian Marriage Certificate will be issued on the same day with the performing of  your marriage

Note: Romanian law requires the presence of two witnesses at the performing of your marriage ceremony
